Matthew 25:35-36

Our Vision

Stephen's Chapel vision is to change lives one at a time by restoring hope, healing, and spiritual growth build on the foundation of the Bible.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Our History

Stephens Chapel Church was founded as a Methodist Episcopal Church on September 7th, 1895. The church was founded by sisters: Evie Hibbett, Molly Lane, Matilda Vannoy, Nan Elliot, Dicie Wooten, Sally Vannoy, Clara Vannoy, Lee Wooten, along with brother and sister, Robert and Lily Vannoy. Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Patch sold the plot of land on which the present Church building stands to the trustees of Stephens Chapel on September 7th, 1895. With the lending of God, $50 and a band of faithful Christian believers, Stephens Chapel rooted itself in the Manchester community. Becoming a living, breathing force within the community bringing hope, dignity, and refuge to those in need. Stephens Chapel was named after its first pastor, Reverend Stephen. We are thankful for Reverend Stephen and all the former ministers who have served following him.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s significant changes occurred in the life of the church. Stephens Chapel, along with other Methodist churches across the world, became part of a large community of believers known as the United Methodist Church. It was during this transitional period that Howard Chapel United Methodist, located in the nearby town of Tullahoma, Tennessee, merged with Stephens Chapel. After much foresight, the two churches saw that both congregations would be better served and that the work of the Lord could multiply by making such a union. Although the physical structure of Howard's Chapel is no longer standing, the altar Bible from Howard's Chapel rests on the communion table in Stephens Chapel.

Like many other churches, transitioning into the 21st century brought many changes for Stephens Chapel; including a decline in attendance due to the covid pandemic. Although our membership may be smaller, we remain steadfast and hopeful that we can draw others to Christ. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we support each other and encourage one another by acting as role models for each other. As such we share our talents and skills with each other in the world to build up the body of Christ.

Here at Stephens Chapel we want to be known as the church that loves.
